Tony Frank, Senior Executive Vice President and Provost

Tony Frank

Senior Executive Vice President and Provost Tony Frank received his bachelor's degree in biology from Wartburg College and his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Illinois. He completed a Ph.D. and residencies in pathology and toxicology at Purdue University. He served on the faculty at Oregon State University before joining Colorado State in 1993, where he served as chairman of the Department of Pathology and Associate Dean for Research in the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. Dr. Frank served as Vice President for Research and Information Technology at Colorado State from 2000-2005. In this role, he was responsible for the network and data systems of the university and for oversight of the approximately $200 million in research activity that occurs annually at Colorado State. He was appointed to the position of Senior Vice President in July 2004 and is responsible in this role for coordination of the academic core of the university. In 2005, he also assumed the title of Provost of Colorado State University, leading the Division of Academic Affairs and serving as CSU's chief academic officer. Dr. Frank was named Senior Executive Vice President in 2008. Tony and his wife, Patti, have three daughters.

John Lincoln, Executive Vice President

John Lincoln

John Lincoln serves as the Executive Vice President, providing senior executive leadership for campus-community development, public affairs, alumni relations, administrative communications, and public safety at Colorado State University. The Executive Vice President assures effective implementation of the President’s strategic agenda; serves as primary executive representative of the President in the President’s absence; and provides day-to-day operational and administrative supervision of Athletics and Advancement. This position serves as a member of the President’s senior management team.

Joyce Berry, Vice President for Advancement and Strategic Initiatives

Joyce Berry

Joyce Berry is Vice President for Advancement and Strategic Initiatives at Colorado State. Berry, a Colorado State alumna, has more than 20 years of fund-raising experience. In her previous position as Dean of CSU's Warner College of Natural Resources, she was responsible for securing the largest private gift in University history.

As Vice President, Berry leads a coordinated university-wide effort to establish and strengthen ties with university constituents; raises private funds to support the strategic initiatives of the university; and oversees effective recognition and stewardship programs for alumni, donors and friends.

She earned a doctorate in forestry and environmental studies from Yale and received the Yale University School of Forestry & Environmental Studies Distinguished Alumni Award in 2005 for her career leadership in education. Since 1990, Berry has co-developed undergraduate, graduate and professional leadership programs used by universities and organizations nationwide. Berry's research and teaching interests have included lifelong education, natural resource policy, public involvement, organizational change and women's leadership.

Robin Brown, Vice President for Enrollment and Access

Robin Brown

Robin Brown, Colorado State's Vice President for Enrollment and Access, came to the University in fall 2006 from her previous position as Vice President for Enrollment at Willamette University. At Colorado State, she oversees the Office of Admissions, Registrar's Office, Student Financial Services, and the Center for Educational Access and Outreach.

She obtained her bachelor's degree in education from State University of New York and her master's and doctoral degrees from the University of Oregon. Before joining Willamette in 2000, she served as interim director of undergraduate admission at The Ohio State University and associate director of admissions and orientation at Oregon State University. Prior to that, she served as director of school relations in the Oregon State System of Higher Education. Brown has been active in many academic organizations including the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC), The College Board, and The American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admission Officers (AACRAO).

Peter K. Dorhout, Vice Provost for Graduate Studies and Assistant Vice President for Research

Peter Dorhout

Dr. Dorhout, a professor of chemistry at Colorado State, serves as Vice Provost for Graduate Studies and Assistant Vice President for Research. A member of the CSU faculty since 1991, he is a recognized expert in solid state and materials chemistry and environmental chemistry. He is a member of the Board of Directors for the Research Corporation, Inc., a philanthropic foundation supporting advances in science in chemistry, physics, and astronomy and on the Board of Directors of the Colorado NanoTechnology Association. He is also an active member in the American Chemical Society, being an elected representative from Colorado to the National Council and elected to serve on the national Committee on Committees as well as the Presidential Leadership Task Force of the ACS. He currently serves on the National Graduate Curriculum Committee for the Homeland Security/Defense Education Consortium. He has active programs in solid state f-element chemistry and nanomaterials science, and his current research interests include heavy metal detection and remediation in aqueous environments, ferroelectric nanomaterials, actinide and rare-earth metal solid state chemistry, and nuclear non-proliferation.

Bill Farland, Vice President for Research

Bill Farland

Bill Farland joined Colorado State in 2006 as the Vice President for Research, bringing decades of interdisciplinary research leadership experience to the position. Previously, he was the highest ranking career scientist at the Environmental Protection Agency, serving as deputy assistant administrator for science in the Office of Research and Development and director of the Office of the Science Advisor. Farland holds his master's in zoology and his doctorate in cell biology and biochemistry from UCLA. He obtained his bachelor's from Loyola University in Los Angeles. He was awarded an Individual National Research Service Award from the National Cancer Institute to pursue postdoctoral training in DNA Damage and Repair at the University of California-Irvine and at Brookhaven National Laboratory.

As Vice President for Research, he serves as the chief institutional advocate and facilitator for faculty research activities and is responsible for programmatic excellence in research. Specific responsibilities of the position include oversight and promotion of external research funding and associated regulations, needs and capabilities; serving as liaison with federal research officials and agencies; identification of research opportunities; and development and oversight of interdisciplinary programs and research centers.

Tom Gorell, Vice President of Administrative Services

Tom Gorell

Dr. Tom Gorell is Colorado State University's Vice President for Administrative Services. He oversees Facilities Management, Human Resource Services, Central Receiving and Mail Services, Environmental Health Services, Training and Organizational Development, and Purchasing. He also serves as a member of the Presidential Cabinet and reports to the Provost's Office. Dr. Gorell received his Ph.D. in Biological Sciences from Northwestern University in 1970, his master's in Zoology from the University of Arkansas in 1966, and his bachelor's in Biological Sciences from Quincy College in 1963. He has worked at Colorado State University since 1975, and prior to his role as Vice President of Administrative Services, Gorell served as Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs, as a professor of biology, and Associate Dean of the College of Natural Sciences.

Dana S. Hiatt, Director of the Office of Equal Opportunity and Diversity

Dana S. Hiatt

Dana S. Hiatt is currently Director of the Office of Equal Opportunity and Diversity at Colorado State University, a role she has served in since 1982. She joined Colorado State in 1978, serving as a Teaching Assistant for Black History as well as an Information Specialist in the Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs. Prior to her current role, she served as Title IX Coordinator/Conciliation Officer for CSU. She received a Bachelor of Arts in History from Langston University in 1968. She also received a Juris Doctorate from the University of Kansas School of Law in 1971. She was one of 100 nationally selected Reginald Heber Smith Community Law Fellows with assignments in Chicago and Oklahoma City. She has experience in private practice, as a Legal Services attorney and served as an Assistant Municipal Attorney for the city of Oklahoma City, the first African American to do so. Dana is married to James H. Hiatt, Chief Judge of the 8th Judicial District.

Blanche M. Hughes, Vice President for Student Affairs

Blanche Hughes

Valuing building strong relationships, effective collaboration and a student-centered institution, Dr. Hughes looks forward to her role in providing leadership to the Division of Student Affairs. Before starting this position, she served as Associate Vice President for Student Affairs from 2002-2006 and as Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs from 2000-2002 at Colorado State University. Prior to that, she spent two years teaching sociology and chairing the department of sociology at Pikes Peak Community College. The majority of her professional experience, however, was spent in her 13-year tenure as the Director of Black Student Services at Colorado State University prior to her move to Colorado Springs in the fall of 1998. She has experience in teaching undergraduate and graduate courses, programming, counseling, training, and leadership development. Her research interest lies in areas relating to race and ethnicity, gender, and student retention in higher education.

Dr. Hughes has a B.A. in education from Earlham College, M.Ed. from Colorado State University, and her Ph.D. in sociology from Colorado State University. Blanche and her husband, Wayne, have four children and two granddaughters.

Paul Kowalczyk, Director of Athletics

Paul Kowalczyk came to Colorado State in May 2006, as Director of Athletics, after having spent six successful years at Southern Illinois University. Kowalczyk has a national reputation as an athletics administrator. In June 2006, he was named Central Region Athletic Director of the Year by the National Association of College Directors of Athletics. He has implemented a philosophy at Colorado State that emphasizes customer service, teamwork and sound business practices within a framework of integrity and honesty.

Kowalczyk became the director of athletics at SIU after formerly having been an administrator at Northwestern University during a time in which the Wildcats' program enjoyed national success. He joined Northwestern's staff in 1991 as the business manager in charge of finance and personnel. Four years later, he was promoted to associate athletic director for external affairs. He also spent three years at Kansas State as assistant athletic director for business operations.

He began his career in athletics in 1986 at Kent State while obtaining a master's degree. He later accepted a position as business manager for athletics at Portland State.

Kowalczyk holds a bachelor's of business administration in accounting and a master's in sports administration from Kent State.

Alan Lamborn, Vice Provost for Undergraduate Affairs

Alan Lamborn

As Vice Provost for Undergraduate Affairs, Professor Lamborn is responsible, working in close cooperation with faculty governance, for undergraduate course and curriculum matters, university graduation requirements, statewide transferability issues, the General Catalog, commencement, the Honors Program, summer session, the Center for Advising and Student Achievement, and Air Force and Army ROTC.

Dr. Lamborn has been a professor of political science, specializing in world politics, at Colorado State University since 1984. He received his B.A. from Oberlin College in 1968 and his M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Michigan in 1970 and 1976 respectively. Prior to his role as Vice Provost, Alan served as Associate Dean of the College of Liberal Arts.

Mark Minor, Vice President for Public Affairs

Mark Minor

Mark Minor is the Vice President for Public Affairs, overseeing Marketing, Public Relations, Communications and Creative Services, and Web Communications. Public Affairs provides central marketing, media and community relations, events, design, photography, Web, TV and video services for a variety of university clients.

Mark joined the University staff in 1990 while still a student at Colorado State and has served in a variety of roles including Editor of Colorado State University Alumni Magazine, Director of Communications and Creative Services, and Associate Vice President of Public Affairs.

Lou Swanson, Vice Provost for Outreach and Strategic Partnerships

Lou Swanson

Lou Swanson is the Vice Provost for Outreach and Strategic Partnerships, overseeing Cooperative Extension, Continuing Education, the Office of Economic Development, the Colorado Water Resources Research Institute, the Colorado Institute for Public Policy, and the Office of International Programs.

Dr. Swanson, a rural sociologist, obtained his bachelor's degree in political science at St. Andrews Presbyterian College, his master's of technology in international development from North Carolina State University and his doctorate in rural sociology from Pennsylvania State University. He was a professor in the University of Kentucky's Department of Sociology before joining CSU in 1997. He has served as professor and chair of the CSU Sociology Department and associate dean of the College of Liberal Arts He has spent the majority of his 24-year career focused on the sociology of agriculture and rural community studies. A past president of the Rural Sociological Society, he maintains an active research agenda centered on policy issues associated with agriculture and rural community change. He has written numerous journal articles and book chapters and has authored or co-authored six books on rural communities in the United States.

Patrick J. Burns, Vice President for Information Technology, Professor of Mechanical Engineering

Patrick J. Burns

Vice President for Information Technology Patrick J. Burns is responsible for oversight of administrative computing, academic computing and networking services, instructional technology infrastructure, and institutional research. A professor of Mechanical Engineering at Colorado State University, Dr. Burns' formal education and teaching experience is in Mechanical Engineering in the areas of heat and mass transfer, alternative energies, and large-scale Monte Carlo simulation of particle transfer in complex enclosures.

Dr. Burns joined the Mechanical Engineering department at Colorado State University in 1978. He has served as Coordinator of Supercomputing at CSU and was formerly the Director of the Westnet regional network from 1986 through 1996. He has also conducted several large networking technology projects with K-12 and public libraries. Dr. Burns currently lives in Fort Collins with his wife, Marcia, and their three sons.

Cara Neth, Director of Presidential and Administrative Communications

Cara Neth

Cara Neth is Director of Administrative Communications, President's Office, Colorado State University.

Originally from Chicago, Neth moved to Fort Collins as a teenager when her father joined the faculty at Colorado State. She graduated from CSU in 1987 with a degree in technical journalism and began her career as a newspaper reporter before returning to campus as a public relations specialist and senior editor in 1989. She served as chief writer for the President's Office for many years, while simultaneously working as internal communications manager in Human Resource Services and then as Assistant to the President, directing President's Office operations for six years. Now, as Director of Administrative Communications and a member of the President's Cabinet, she manages communications projects – including speeches, white papers and special reports – for the President and senior administration. She also works with constituents to resolve questions and concerns that are directed to the President.

Katie Kalkstein, Executive Assistant to the President and Chancellor

Katie Kalkstein

Katie Kalkstein serves as the Executive Assistant to the President and Chancellor for the Colorado State University System. Prior to joining the President's Office, Katie served as the assistant to the Vice President for Administrative Services, and provided support on many projects in the Office of Budgets and Institutional Analysis.
